Today is my birthday.
I started my fantastic celebration with my girlfriends last Friday, when we met at JOEY’s Restaurants. The excuse, which you would think would be to celebrate my birthday, was to try their fish tacos. I have been raving so much about them that I think my friends were just sick of me describing their look and flavour, so yummylicious, that they gave in and joined me to devour them. That’s what friends are for, right?
Being all Latinas, we met, late and unpunctual, as usual.
We had to have some kind of alcoholic beverage on hand, otherwise how on earth would we survive the next hour or so talking about our kids and husbands? Yeah, I didn’t think so either. So we all ordered Bellinis.
The waitress, who seemed to look like a modest version of Carrie Underwood, was very attentive and helpful with our requests and probably judging us at the same time, when all of us decided to place our order and sounding a little like a capella.
Amiga 1: “Fish Tacos please”,
Amiga 2: “Fish Tacos please”,
Amiga 3: “Fish Tacos please”,
Amiga 4: “Fish Tacos please”,
Amiga 5: “Fish Tacos please”,
Me: “Fish Tacos please”
She left and soon after that, we got to enjoy the arrival of the watering-mouth dish. Every time I order these tacos I get that little pinch of pain below my ears, where the jaw connects, that’s the sign the food will be good. I squeeze the lemon on them and gently add some of the hot salsa.
God: when I die and go to heaven, can I have this meal on my daily menu?
Once in heaven. We decided to change the alcohol intake and went from the Bellini to the strawberry margarita. And, after several inquires of our waitress if we wanted or not the dessert menu, we decided to look at it and see if there was something worth ordering despite our stomachs begging for peace.
One coffee and an inquiring waitress later we ALL went for a Molten Lava Chocolate Sufflé. Our hearts were happy. Warm, creamy, sweet and silky were the words in my head. God: can I add this one to my menu as well? You are the best!
I don’t know why my friends got to think good Tacos couldn’t be found in a casual dining restaurant in Vancouver. And to be honest, I would have thought the same thing 2 years ago. But I swear, when you try these tacos, you will forget you are in Canada. Thank goodness it was my birthday, they got to pay for my almost $50 dollar bill.
Is there a favourite meal you like for your birthday? How do you celebrate?
